Our Climate Commitment
Phillips Hobbies is on a mission to become a more sustainable small business. We'll be the first to hold our hands up and say we're not perfect; but we're all on this journey together, figuring out how we can reduce our impact on the environment.
You have our firm commitment that we will keep improving and constantly questioning how we can do better for you and the planet. Collectively, the changes we all make have a big impact.
Eco-Conscious Packaging
Packaging is where we feel we can have one of the largest impacts as an online retailer. Over the past few years, we've swapped out plastic tape for a paper alternative. We now use 100% recycled and recyclable void fill paper, biodegradable cornstarch peanuts or fully recyclable bubble film. Padded envelopes are being phased out for a plastic-free replacement. Boxes and packaging received from our suppliers are reused wherever possible. And many of our new boxes are manufactured carbon neutrally or are purchased from B-Corps - certified businesses that place sustainability as an important value.
We still have to use bubble wrap for some fragile products. We're trialling many possible replacements and hope to find one soon, but we have to be confident it'll protect your items before we widely roll it out - otherwise it is simply a false economy. For now - please save and reuse bubble wrap if you can.
Carbon Neutral Delivery
Deliveries have a carbon footprint. That's why we support cutting-edge companies that remove carbon from the air.
Here's how it works: For every order we receive, a formula is used to calculate the estimated shipping emissions. Based on those estimates, a portion of our revenue goes to carbon removal companies that have been vetted by scientists from Carbon Direct. Those companies use that money to remove however much carbon our shipments created. Any extra funds go toward the further development of carbon removal technologies.
Together, participating businesses have…
- Removed thousands of tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere
- Provided carbon-neutral shipping on more than ten million orders
Let's meet a few of the companies removing carbon from the sky:
Heirloom
Heirloom's direct air capture technology enhances the carbon mineralization process. Heirloom's technology speeds up the rate at which naturally occurring minerals capture CO₂ rather than using energy-intensive fans to draw air in.
Remora
Remora captures CO₂ from semi-truck tailpipes as they drive, with the CO₂ destined for long-term storage.
Charm
Charm captures CO₂ using plant waste, converts it into a stable, carbon-rich liquid, and safely stores it deep underground—out of reach of wildfires and soil erosion.
